The difference between sanding paper, sanding cloth and non-woven fabric grinding

2025-07-10

Sandpaper cloth is a new type of grinding product with a three-dimensional mesh structure formed by bonding high-quality nylon fibers with abrasives such as corundum and silicon carbide through non-woven technology. This type of product was born in the 1970s, and after decades of development, it has now formed several series including non-woven grinding discs, non-woven grinding wheels and rollers, grinding belts and discs with backing, and special fiber grinding products. It is widely used in the polishing of metal and non-metal materials, deburring, oxide film removal, and decorative lines.

Characteristics of Sandpaper and Sandcloth

Compared with traditional abrasive products, sandpaper and cloth have the following characteristics:

Due to its good elasticity and mild grinding force, it can quickly repair the surface while maintaining the dimensional integrity of the workpiece.

During the processing, effective heat dissipation greatly avoids deformation and blackening of the workpiece caused by overheating.

The three-dimensional network structure composed of high-quality nylon fiber material has good water resistance, oil resistance, and anti clogging effects.

⑷ Long lifespan, high cost-effectiveness, time-saving and labor-saving.

Sandpaper and sandpaper cloth, as ideal surface treatment tools, are currently quite popular in developed countries in Europe and America, whether in factories or home DIY, and are increasingly accepted by more and more industries in China.

2 Classification of Sandpaper and Cloth

Below is a brief introduction to various products:

⑴ Non woven fabric grinding sheet

This type of product is currently the most popular non-woven abrasive, also known as industrial scouring pad. Usually used manually or by machines, it is convenient, fast, and efficient, greatly saving the complexity of surface treatment. It is widely used in the polishing, deburring, and decorative lines of stainless steel and other alloy hardware products, woodworking furniture, and other aspects. There are also many applications in surface treatment in the mechanical, electronic, and ceramic industries.

⑵ Non woven fabric grinding wheel and roller

This type of product mainly includes insert type flying wing wheels, drawing wheels, laminated type fiber wheels, winding type winding wheels, non-woven fabric brush rollers, etc.

Flying wing wheels have a wide range of applications, with complete specifications and models. Due to their ability to adapt to irregular surface grinding and uniform grinding patterns, they are used in the hardware industry such as watches, door locks, handles, locks, as well as in the line processing of high-end wooden products. Currently, this type of processing technology is quite mature.

There are two types of wire drawing wheels, composite sandpaper and individual non-woven fabric. They are usually used in conjunction with electric polishing wire drawing tools (as shown in the picture) and are used for polishing and drawing satin patterns on surfaces of stainless steel, alloys, glass, and hard plastics. They are widely used in industries such as automobiles, kitchens, elevators, and glass furniture.

Laminated fiber wheels have different hardness levels. High quality fiber wheels are strong and durable, with beautiful and uniform sand patterns. They are usually operated mechanically and are currently the most commonly used type of non-woven grinding wheel. They are used for polishing, drawing, and deburring stainless steel, copper, and alloy products.

The winding wheel is a high-speed and efficient grinding wheel made of non-woven fabric wound in one direction, with different hardness. It is used for surface treatment of stainless steel, glass and other alloy products, and its efficiency and effect are better than those of wing wheels and laminated fiber wheels. It requires high-speed operation, and the surface should not be blackened or the patterns should not be chaotic, so the manufacturing process of the winding wheel is relatively difficult.

There are various types of non-woven brush rollers, including radial and coiled ones, most of which are used for deburring and decorative lines on colored steel plates, galvanized plates, laminated plates, copper plates, stainless steel plates, printed circuit boards, and nameplates. The use of non-woven brush rollers has good consistency, clear patterns, and high efficiency.

Non woven abrasive belts and discs: These products use high-strength nylon mesh fabric as the backing, supplemented by a non-woven abrasive layer. This structure is a perfect combination of excellent tensile strength and anti clogging grinding. Non woven sanding belts are commonly used for stretch treatment of metals and high-end wooden objects. Their biggest advantage is good dimensional retention of the workpiece, clear sanding effect, high smoothness, and they are not easily blocked during the grinding process. Non woven sanding belts are more than ten times more durable than ordinary sanding belts. The sand tray, combined with electric and pneumatic tools, can quickly remove coverings, rust, and other debris from various workpieces.

3 Instructions for Using Non woven Grinding Products

The significance of common specification representations

Sandpaper and cloth are divided into many varieties and specifications according to the type, particle size, and tissue density (hardness) of the abrasive.

Abrasive: Generally, corundum and silicon carbide are used. Corundum is commonly used for grinding metals, while silicon carbide is used for grinding hard and brittle materials or wood.

Particle size: The coarser the particle size, the higher the grinding efficiency, the rougher the surface texture, and the lower the smoothness. The corresponding mesh fiber structure is more fluffy.

The influence of organizational density on the surface quality of processed workpieces: higher density results in clearer patterns than lower density, and is less prone to pattern tilting or interruption.

Several parameters for using non-woven grinding wheels

The influence of the rotational speed of the grinding wheel on the processing results of the workpiece and the service life of the grinding tool: When the workpiece material is hard and the surface treatment effect requires high, a high rotational speed is needed, but the service life of the grinding tool will be correspondingly shortened; The workpiece material is relatively soft and low-speed is selected, resulting in relatively rough surface treatment results.

The influence of feed rate on local patterns of workpieces: the faster the feed rate, the shorter the time for local grinding, and the fewer the number of pattern segments; The slower the feed rate, the longer it allows for processing of local patterns.

The pressure when grinding the workpiece with a grinding wheel: When the pressure is high, it is easy to burn the workpiece, and the grinding wheel will change shape; When the pressure is low, the texture of the workpiece is not clear enough, and the efficiency is not high enough. Usually, the pressure on the wing shaped grinding wheel is relatively lower, while the pressure on the winding wheel is higher.

⑶ Environment of use

Non woven abrasive sheets can be used in environments with water, oil, or other corrosive agents, without worrying about issues such as rusting of steel wire balls and sanding of ordinary sandpaper. They can be used in conjunction with pallets or directly by hand.

When there are high requirements for the surface, grinding wheels are often used in conjunction with lubricants, which can effectively dissipate heat, improve surface color, and reduce dust.

Non woven abrasive products have the advantages of high efficiency, convenience, speed, safety, and environmental protection compared to traditional abrasive products. In the past, their prices were relatively high for a considerable period of time, and only foreign companies were able to produce them. Although the domestic market is still dominated by foreign brands, the production of sandpaper and sandpaper fabrics in China is developing rapidly, with many of these enterprises located in Guangdong and Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. With the gradual localization and rationalization of prices for sandpaper and cloth, it is believed that they will become more popular in the next 3-5 years.
